Balboa Fun Zone in Newport Harbor is a fun place to spend a Saturday. A few weeks ago we took the ferry over from Balboa Island to spend time shooting some night scenes there. (Well, Brandon went and ate hot wings while I took photos.) What began as just an exercise in camera settings and capturing motion with slower shutter speeds, culminated in photos that, to me, look more like abstract works of art. Focusing on the changing patterns of colored light and the angles of the camera created some interesting dynamic shapes. It was fun to see something different in what could have been a rather predictable scene. As I have learned from photographer Ralph Velasco, there are so many ways to capture the same scene and create an interesting portrait of a place.
